Applications for the “Vencer o Adamastor” Award will be individual, and any Portuguese citizen or resident in Portugal for at least 3 years, who is under 40 years of age at the time of the application deadline, can apply.
The prize consists of a monetary award of €20,000 and a diploma with a mention from the jury.
The submitted works should have a single author, and submitting to this prize constitutes an honor commitment to the authorship and authenticity of the work.
The works should have a significant component in the fields of electrotechnics and computing and should fall within one of the areas of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) or the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Works in Portuguese or English will be accepted, whether they are original or based on works published within the five years preceding the contest’s closing date.
The works should possess a high level of quality and scientific originality, which may include summaries of master’s and doctoral theses and/or be based on previously published works.
INESC may publish the winning works of the prize in a format and on a date to be determined.
The presentation of the works must meet the following requirements:
a. A title.
b. The author’s name and affiliation.
c. A maximum of 30 A4 pages, with a font size of no less than 11pt, single spacing, and minimum margins of 2.5 cm, which will include, in addition to the text, relevant bibliography. Works exceeding this size will not be considered.
d. If there are references in the submitted document to other elements such as attachments or other content that may be found on the internet or other sources, these elements will not be taken into account in the evaluation by the Jury.
In addition to the work itself, the following should be provided:
a. A summary of up to 1000 characters, including spaces.
b. The area in which the work falls according to the ACM or IEEE classification.
c. Up to six keywords that identify the subject of the work.
d. An identification of the author’s original contributions and a review of the state of the art, as well as, if applicable, evidence of the impact of the submitted work.
e. An autonomous document of no more than one page (with a version in Portuguese and in English / dimensions indicated in 8 c.), aimed at the general public, explaining in an educational manner what the author considers to have achieved with their work, as well as the value and impact it brings to the current state of scientific and technological knowledge.
The jury will meet, preferably in person, at a location and on a date to be determined for each edition, with all meeting costs fully covered by INESC.
In the selection of the winning work, the following criteria will be taken into account:
a. The scientific quality of the presented work.
b. The specific contributions of the candidate.
c. The potential practical, economic, and social impact of the results obtained.
The award presentation will be made at a public ceremony jointly organized by INESC and the newspaper Público, at a location and date to be determined for each edition.
The winners of various editions of the prize will retain sole copyright ownership of the awarded works.
INESC and Público may publish excerpts or summaries of the winning works in a format and on a date to be determined.
