Mission

Our mission

INESC is a private non-profit association with public utility status, dedicated to education, scientific research, technology transfer, and technological consultancy.

The institute develops competitive science and technology, leads national and international collaborations, and trains highly qualified researchers and engineers — contributing to Portugal’s modernisation and to building a stronger connection between science, technology, and economic development.

Working closely with universities and industry, INESC’s strategy rests on three core pillars:

// Scientific and technological excellence
// Economic merit
// Sustainability and growth

History

The History of INESC

INESC was founded in 1980 and established itself as a reference model for university-industry collaboration — the first institution to demonstrate that a country at Portugal’s stage of development could have a meaningful place in research and development.

In 1987, recognition of the value of INESC’s work led to its designation as a public utility institution.

INESC’s associate members include Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Altice Group (MEO), the University of Lisbon, the University of Porto, the University of Coimbra, and Correios de Portugal (CTT).

Structure

The Structure of INESC

Today, INESC has become a diversified group of institutions, with associates dedicated to scientific, technological, and innovation activities, alongside a set of holdings in more commercially oriented organisations.

The group model adopted by INESC is one of diversity, complementarity, and creative freedom — producing unique contributions to a modern Portugal, a strong economy, and a better society.
