VENCER O ADAMASTOR

Regulation

Applications for the “Vencer o Adamastor” Award will be individual, and any Portuguese citizen or proven to be resident in Portugal for at least 3 (three) years, who is under 40 (forty) years of age at the time of the application deadline, can apply.

The prize consists of a monetary award of €20,000 (twenty thousand euros) and a diploma.

The submitted works should have a single author and be developed in an institution based in Portugal, constituting its submission to this award an honor commitment to the authorship and authenticity of the work.

The works should have a significant component in the fields of electrotechnics and computing and should fall within one of the areas of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) [1] or the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) [2] .

Works in Portuguese or English will be accepted, whether they are original or based on works published within the five years prior to the application’s deadline.

Works should possess a high level of quality and scientific originality and may include summaries of master’s theses or doctoral dissertations and/or be based on previously published work.

INESC may publish the winning works of the prize in a format and date to be determined.

Under penalty of exclusion, the works must include the following elements:

a. A title;

b. The author’s name and affiliation;

c. A summary of up to 1000 characters, including spaces;

d. The identification of the area in which the work falls according to the ACM or IEEE classification;

e. Up to six keywords that identify the subject of the work;

f.  An identification of the author’s original contributions and a review of the state of the art, as well as, if appropriate, evidence of the impact of the work submitted.

The works must also comply with the following rules:

a. A maximum of 30 A4 pages, with a font size of no less than 11pt, single spacing, and minimum margins of 2.5 cm, which will include, in addition to the text, relevant bibliography. Works exceeding this size will not be considered;

b. Avoid elements such as annexes or other content that can be found on the internet or other sources, which are intended to complement the content of the work. These elements will not be taken into account in the jury’s assessment;

c. The presentation of a stand-alone document no longer than one page in length, in Portuguese (dimensions indicated in a.), aimed at the general public, stating in an educational manner what the author considers to have achieved with their work, as well as the value and impact it brings to the current state of scientific and technological knowledge.

The jury will meet at a place, date and format to be determined, to evaluate the works and select the winner.

The following criteria will be taken into account when selecting the winning work:
a. The scientific quality of the work presented;
b. The specific contributions of the candidate;
c. The potential practical, economic and social impact of the results obtained.

The prize will be awarded at a public ceremony, organized jointly by INESC and the Público newspaper, at a place and date to be determined for each edition.

The winners of the various editions of the prize will retain sole copyright ownership of the awarded works.

INESC and the Público newspaper may publish, in a format and date to be determined, excerpts or summaries of the works that win the prize.
