Adamastor Award Regulations

Applications for the Adamastor Award are individual. Eligible candidates are Portuguese citizens, or individuals who have been resident in Portugal for at least 3 (three) years, aged under 40 (forty) at the submission deadline.

The award consists of a monetary prize of €20,000 (twenty thousand euros) and a diploma bearing a commendation from the jury president.

Submitted works must have a single author and must have been developed at an institution based in Portugal. Submission of an application constitutes a declaration of honour regarding the authorship and authenticity of the work.

Works must have a significant component in the areas of electrical engineering and computing, and must fall within the classification of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) or the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Works may be submitted in Portuguese or English, and may be original works or based on work published in the five years preceding the submission deadline.

Works must demonstrate high scientific quality and originality. They may include summaries of master's dissertations or doctoral theses, and/or be based on previously published work.

Each submission must include, under penalty of exclusion, all of the following elements:
a. A title;
b. The author's name and institutional affiliation;
c. An abstract of up to 1,000 characters, including spaces;
d. Identification of the area of the work according to the ACM or IEEE classification;
e. Up to six keywords identifying the subject of the work;
f. A description of the author's original contributions, a review of the state of the art and, where applicable, evidence of the impact of the submitted work.

Each submission must also comply with the following requirements:
a. A maximum of 30 A4 pages, in a font no smaller than 11pt, with single spacing and minimum margins of 2.5 cm. Works exceeding this length will not be considered;
b. Appendices or other content that could be found online or in other sources, intended to supplement the work, should be avoided. Such elements will not be taken into account in the jury's evaluation.

In addition to the work itself, candidates must submit a separate document of no more than one page, written in Portuguese (formatted as specified in 8-a.), addressed to a general audience and setting out in plain language what the author considers to have been achieved, and the value and impact of the work on the current state of scientific and technological knowledge.

In addition to the work and the document described in the previous point, candidates must also submit, as a separate document, the text corresponding to point 7(f) — the description of the author's original contributions and review of the state of the art, and, where applicable, evidence of the work's impact. This document is intended to facilitate the distribution of submissions to jury members and does not replace the inclusion of the same content in the work itself. This text must correspond exactly to the text included under point 7(f).

The jury will convene, at a location and date, and in a format to be determined, to evaluate the submissions and select the laureate.

The selection of the winning work will take into account the following criteria:
a. The scientific quality of the submitted work;
b. The candidate's specific contributions;
c. The potential practical, economic and social impact of the results obtained.

INESC and Jornal Público will present the award at a public ceremony, at a location and on a date to be determined for each edition.

Winners of the various editions of the award will remain the sole holders of the copyright over the awarded works.

INESC and Jornal Público may publish, in a format and on a date to be determined, the winning works, as well as excerpts or summaries thereof. Such publication may include personal data of the laureates, namely name, affiliation and photographs. By applying for the award, candidates consent to these publications.
